Field Trip spring 2010

The first day of spring snow didn’t slow down the Apprentices of Photojournaling. The After School Matters class tool a field trip to Garfield Park Conservatory to spend some time getting to know the gardens and working to complete a photography scavenger hunt. After lunch we took the El downtown to Gallery 37 to see what other creative Apprentices around the city of Chicago have been making in past programs. After we crossed the street to the Cultural Center to enjoy the architecture, Tiffany dome, black and white photography and the multiple art showings that were taking place that day.

Profile Photos Re-shoot

After group critique, the Apprentices re-shot, edited or corrected their previous profile attempt. This included the use of Photoshop for re-cropping, changing the font, making the photo black and white etc… The proper use of font to describe their personality was stressed during critique and in most cases revised in the 2nd attempt.

Profile Photo

The Apprentices of Photo Journaling, an After School Matters program, set out to find a profile shot of themselves while we had some nice weather yesterday here in Chicago. The goal was to work in groups, using the theory of macro medium and wide. First finding their composition via a written proposal, then taking the camera out and finding the ideal location around Taft High School & Norwood Park. The person in the shot directed the photographer on what their vision was, then photographed them at multiple angles showing them the progress as they went. The photographed gave the final ok before heading back to the classroom to edit the photos in Photoshop, adding and manipulating text to compliment the photograph. After group critique, Apprentices went out to re-shoot or re-edit if needed to upload the files to their blogs. The photos below are the first run.

5 Senses spring 2010

The Apprentices set out over the weekend to capture three photos of each of the 5 senses. Sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste were all represented by visual digital photography means. A sample of the photos are in the gallery. They were also to use their prior experience with Macro Medium Wide setting up a shot for each of the senses.

Macro Medium Wide test run

With the start of the new 2010 spring term, we went out and took a few shots after the snow storm to see where the new Apprentices were with their photo skills. Of course we tried out the Macro Medium Wide, looking for shots in this format that matched the mini scavenger hunt.

Apprentice Photography Field Trip fall 09

The Apprentices from Fall 2009 had a photography scavenger hunt and an writing assignment to work on while at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. The requirements that each Apprentices were given are below. We chose at least two photos from each Apprentice’s body of work from the Field Trip and a maximum of 3 shots. All photos were turned in after editing in Photoshop CS4 and sized to 600×400 pixels at a resolution of 72dpi. We did group critique on each Apprentices photos as they related to the requirements of the scavenger hunt, composition and subject matter.

Chicago Botanic Gardens Field Trip 2009

Photo Journaling planned a field trip to the Chicago Botanic Gardens this Fall expecting cold and possibly bad weather. We were pleasantly surprised when it was sunny and nearly 70 degrees the entire day. The Apprentices were given details for an photography scavenger hunt around the gardens to help build their portfolio. The Apprentices work will be posted here shortly. Robert R Gigliotti brought his camera and got the Apprentices in action capturing everything on their list. As we do every year, we also did a group photo of the Apprentices.

Week 4 photography

Apprentices took the camera’s home again to find photos to pair with the project “a list of 40 things I love”. The writing will be posted soon…The Apprentices made three critique criteria of:
1. Does it get to the point?
2. Is it pleasing to the eye?
3. Is it creative?
With group discussion, the Apprentices rated the photos and we talked about why how and what…Enjoy!

Macro Medium Wide take home

The Apprentices of Photo Journaling took home the digital cameras in search of macro medium and wide shots in their own neighborhood. They had the camera’s for about 4 full days. Critique followed on Tuesday with a review of Composition, subject matter and overall opinion as a group discussion rating them 1-5. The Apprentices see how quickly people love, despise or enjoy exploring their photos. If you have to be standing next to the viewer to explain your photo, then maybe you need to rethink, shooting the photo again so the photo can stand on its own.

Apprentice photography Spring 2007

I’ve been digging around my computer trying to find prior years of Photo Journaling Apprentices work…I found some digital photos that the Apprentices of Fall 2007 took. Most of the Apprentices were returning from the prior year (Fall 2006 & Spring 2007) and had excellent photoshop skills.
